Napier/Hastings

These twin cities, on the Heretaunga plainland on the southern side of Hawke Bay are based largely on the produce from this fertile agricultural land. On the sea, Napier has developed a marine parade which is very attractive given that the sea itself is not suitable for swimming because it shelves very steeply. There is considerable rivalry between the two cities.
Napier Marine Parade. Napier has long had a marine parade. Over the years it has changed significantly and now it is possible to see buildings from a previous era and structures more from recent time. It has a lovely statue of Pania of the Reef and a marine aquarium which are worthy of seeing. Napier foreshore

Gannet Colony at Cape Kidnappers. This is one of three colonies in New Zealand . It is accessible by taking a tour along the beach or overland to the Cape itself. The birds nest on a flat area  right by the cliff face and make a great site if you can stand their noise. The birds are great to watch on the wing and fold their wings up at the last second and dive vertically into the water to catch their meal. Napier capekidnappers
