wellington Wellington with a population of 300,000 is the third largest city and  the politcal capital of the country. It is known as 'the windy city' but perhaps surprisingly, it has more calm days than anywhere else.

Drive to the top of Mt Victoria for a great view across the harbour and north to Hutt city. Notice the clear line of the fault along the line of the northern motorway. It last moved in 1855.
Drive past (or take a tour of ) Parliament. The main building is made from marble imported from the north of the South Island and the newer circular building houses some of the administrative offices of Parliament. The admin building is commonly known as 'the beehive'.
Drive past Peter Jacksons workshops in Miramar and continue round the bays through Seatoun and Evans Bay.
Visit the National Museum called 'Te Papa'

There are many excellent restaurants in Wellington. Walk from your hotel down to Courtney Place where you will be embarrassed for choice.

On the left is a view across to the passenger wharf area close by the central business district.
