Mt
Cook ( Maori Name
Aoraki ) is our tallest mountain standing at 12349 feet. Is has over 100 peaks nearby that are over 10000 feet. The longest glacier in the country ( Tasman glacier ) flows away from its base towards the east coast. The main settlement at the foot of the mountain hinges around the large tourist hotel called The Hermitage. Many climbers use Mt Cook and the peaks in the vicinity to hone their climbing skills. The mountain has snow on it nearly all year round. This view of Cook is taken from the west coast side. |
