The shallow but severe quake that occurred on 22nd February 2010  caused considerable damage to the central and eastern parts of the city. The rest of the country is physically unaffected and is perfectly safe. The city itself will take years  to return to normality. Plans are under way to restore some of the worst hit areas to parklands and there will be some exciting new developments in the CBD.
